  Waxing

  i am going to try this on my legs.

  has anyone, or does anyone get their legs waxed?

  how bad does it hurt?

  For my last birthday, I'm treating myself to laser hair removal. I never did waxing, because I have a horrible problem with the bumps when the hair grows back. I figured that four to six treatments over four to six months was worth the cost (since it is supposed to be permanent).

  It does hurt. A lot. But one can apply an anesthetic cream to numb the areas before, if pain is an issue. It isn't for me, so I forewent the mess.

  After the first treatment, I was able to continue to shave (but only needed to do so about one fourth as frequently). I had my second treatment this week, and I think my underarms are done (it takes about two weeks to notice if the hair is really gone).

  But I definitely recommend it, and I can't wait until it's done. No shaving or waxing, ever again.

  Has there been any fall out yet over the Higher Education WT article?

  Actually, the "relaxed view" has never been the official view. JWs pay lip service to "the world" by saying they do not condemn higher education. But the literature and the lectures received "from the platform" will never do anything but discourage it or equate "higher education" with a 9-month "technical degree."

  They have always condemned higher education and required those elders who did send their kids to college not to advise it. Look what happened to Richie Rich when he mentioned going to college in his comment to the congregation.

  What they tell outsiders what they require and what they actually require of insiders are polar opposites.

  Dumping Sodas

  I teach high school. Teenaged boys (most, at least) eat nonstop. They sit in class when they are supposed to be working talking about food. One pair of boys, this year, has had the same conversation about sandwiches about a dozen times. Several years back, I had two boys in class that talked about what they watched on the cooking channel like it was porn.

  When I lived with my older teenaged brother, my mom had to give me food to hide in my room so my brother would not find it and eat it. My parents did discover was that if it took a long time to prepare, it was less likely to disappear....So meat stayed frozen, as did pasta sauce, etc. "Good Dinners" consisted of small roasts (take an hour roast), rather than steaks that can be broiled in ten minutes. My brother was capable of eating two pounds of deli meat in a less than five minutes. There was always plenty of popcorn we could pop, a can of soup we could open, or the ever present Top Ramen.

  And there was never soda in our house, not even juice (liquid candy, essentially). Water was fine, and if we wanted it flavored, there was unsweetened koolaid that we had to make (and mix in the sugar) ourselves.

  What finally solved the problem was when my brother went to work at a restaurant that provided a full meal (and all the soda he could drink) for the shift. It was a match made in heaven. Your son is 16. Send him to work at a pasta restaurant. Make him eat there and fill up. He will also probably be working during the dinner hour, so it kills two roast chickens with one stone....

  Summer district convention schedule

  does anyone have the date(s) for the district convention for san diego?

  a family member asked me when our convention was and i had to fumble around.

  they think we still go to meetings.

  I just noticed that these are organized by date, rather than location. Every other organizer would categorize by state or region, then locality, then by date.

  My law school graduation coincides with one of the dates at my mom's location. If this is her convention date, I wonder which she will choose. I guess I will have to make her look like a real poop (replace with intended term for excrement) to all the other relatives that I will tell, if she doesn't come. I'll look like a thug, but she will look like a heartless bitch. This would devastate my my dad.

  I live in some foothills, not too near any creeks or tributaries, so me and the property is fine. I worry about the wind more. Lots of big trees around here. It's dry tonight, but come tomorrow with another big storm and another high tide, it will be pretty bad. The lower river (Gurneville area of the Russian River) was evacuated early this afternoon.

  Last time the weather conspired to flood us out, I was a senior in high school and we missed school for a week, but my parents lost a car to the Napa River. (No one was in hurt. The car was parked at the dealership, awaiting service...)

  Have you ever said " Happy Hanukkah" to a Jew?

  we went out to lunch today and when the server brought our check he wished us a merry christmas.

  my six year old daughter piped up " we celebrate hanukkah".

  when the server returned he couldn't get out a " happy hannukah" - he stumbled for words- finally said something about a happy holiday.

  Moshe,

  Have you considered this: Perhaps they are worried that to say our holiday greeting, it would offend. Sort of like if you haven't been confirmed Catholic, you aren't supposed to take communion in the Catholic Church? What if Jews were offended by gentiles offering us good wishes of the Jewish-type...I bet that's what they are worried about. You know your neighbor is a perfectly polite woman. She wasn't sure if saying it would offend-I bet that's why she stumbled.

  this milestone essay critically examines one of the religions main publications for teaching their children and new recruits about their blood beliefs, how can blood save your life?

  the peer-reviewed essay details many misrepresentations of medical facts, which the religion partly relies on to support its blood prohibition, thus denying its members from making fully informed medical decisions.

  As of 12/14 a.m. This article has not made it to the two powerhouse internet-based research sites, LexisNexis or Westlaw. Since I could not actually find the Journal of Church and State as a Law Review, I tried shepardizing the Molko case. Somelaw review articles that cite Molko involve JWs (to be printed and read when have the next two weeks off). The current article was not to be found.

  Shepardizing is a search that turns up ALL THE OTHER CASES (articles and statutes) that cite the case. So if a law review article cites the Molko case, then a shepardization should turn up that law review article. If the Journal of Church and State does not make its articles available to LexisNexis or Westlaw, it is unlikely that anyone in a position to take it seriously would take it seriously.

  Constitutional issues surrounding church and state are a hot button issue for the federal courts right now. However, if this journal is not on Lexis or Westlaw the lawyers who clerk for federal justices won't find them.

  Law review articles are never considered legal authority. However, there is nothing stopping a lawyer from borrowing the arguments from an article, relying on similar analysis of facts to the legal precedent cited in the article. Molko is good law on the issue of misrepresentation by a church, so good tort awyers (with clever law clerks) will be able to lift these arguments, and will at least get past summary judgment (which prompts the settlement dialogues...).
